Royal Canadian Legion zone commander Jim Diack praises local trio of Remembrance Day poster winners

When officials with the Qualicum Beach Legion sent off the best of the best student-drawn Remembrance Day posters to the zone finals, they didn't expect to dominate the contest.

That's what appears to have happened though, as three students from Kwalikum Secondary School took top spot in their respective categories.

At a special ceremony at the Branch 76 Legion Thursday night, 12 students from KSS were given awards for their posters by zone commander Jim Diack.

Billie Reath-Lang, Daniel Doukakis and Alisha Yaram took third, second and first place respectively in teh black and white intermediate category, while Savanah Campbell, Gayle Anderson and Charlotte Telfer-Wan placing third, second and first in the black and white senior category. In the colour intermediate grouping, Sarah Heine, Grace Yacoboski and Grace Braun placed  three, two, one, while Marie VanBenthem, Marnie Gallop and Kiera Chycioski won the top three spots for colour posters in the senior category.

Each of the winners received a $80 cheque to go along with their certificates.

Charlotte Telfer-Wan, Alisha Yarham and Kiera Chycoski also took first place — and another $80 cheque — in the zone competition. Their pictures are currently being judged on the provincial level.

"There was an extraordinary amount of work put into these posters by these young people nad they were seriously judged by a group of dedicated people at the branch level, who go over hundreds of entries," Diack said. "There are 10 branches in this zone and one quarter of the winners were from this branch. That's really good."
