The Little Qualicum River Regional Park land exchange was approved through an alternative approval process that concluded on Nov. 28.

The Regional District of Nanaimo conducted the AAP in accordance with Section 86 of the Community Charter. Of an estimated 136,802 of eligible electors in the regional district, three valid elector response forms were received by the deadline in opposition to Bylaw No. 1859, 2022.

Approval for the bylaw was obtained as less than 10 per cent of electors submitted an elector response form by the Nov. 28 response deadline. As the 10 per cent threshold was not met, the RDN can proceed with the land exchange.

Through this land exchange, the RDN will acquire 0.27 hectares of land from Wicklow West Holdings in exchange for 0.265 hectares of regional parkland. The parkland remnant pieces disposed through this process are not connected and offered no connection to the regional park.

The new land acquired will allow better access to the park and provide a more coherent layout for the regional park and its future planning and management.
