Money being funneled to homeless programs

Regional District of Nanaimo board members voted to support a recommendation that would see $100,000 distributed between Parksville and Nanaimo to help in the fight against homelessness Tuesday at a Committee of the Whole Meeting.

Regional District of Nanaimo board members voted to support a recommendation that would see $100,000 distributed between Parksville and Nanaimo to help in the fight against homelessness Tuesday at a Committee of the Whole Meeting.

If approved by the board, $34,000 of the grant from the Vancouver Island Health Authority will go to Parksville’s Oceanside Homelessness Task Force.

Parksville Counc. Marc Lefebvre spoke at the meeting about the task force, saying it had been running for about 10 months and was working on several projects that could use funding; the main one being a Homelessness Census which would give an idea of the magnitude of the problem in District 69, he said.

Area H Director David Bartram was in support of the motion and requested staff brief the board on how the money will ultimately be spent, as they hadn’t dealt with this issue before.
