Nanaimo Fire Rescue used its aerial ladder truck to pluck an injured construction worker from the top of a building Monday, July 6.

Firefighters responded shortly after 3 p.m. when they were called to a construction site on Barsby Street at the foot of Prideaux Street. The aerial ladder truck was called in when it was discovered there was no safe way to bring the worker down from the rooftop five storeys above ground.

A Nanaimo Fire Rescue technical rope rescue team was also called in case their skills were needed to bring the injured man down safely.

The entire operation to bring the man to a waiting B.C. Ambulance crew lasted about 30 minutes.

“Crews were able to remove him in the basket of our aerial device and he is now on the ground in the care of B.C. Ambulance,” said Geoff Whiting, Nanaimo Fire Rescue acting deputy chief.

Whiting said he believed the man’s injury took place on the roof of the building and that he had a possible dislocated knee, but had no other details about the patient.
