Nanaimo RCMP arrest man carrying four rifles wrapped in a blanket

RCMP aiming to reunite firearms with rightful owner

A hunch by a Nanaimo police officer resulted in the seizure of four rifles.

Nanaimo RCMP arrested a 23-year-old man at approximately 4:30 a.m. on May 9 in the Northfield Road and Wilgress Roada area, after an officer discovered the man was carrying four rifles wrapped inside a blanket, according to a press release issued by the police.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the individual was arrested and the rifles have been seized. He said the trigger locks are still on the guns and that they were likely stolen.

“We’ve checked them. We’ve checked the serial numbers, we’ve checked the databases and they haven’t been involved in any crimes,” he said.

The 23-year-old man, whose name was not released, was arrested for one count of possession of stolen property, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release. The man was later released and has a court date scheduled for Aug. 13 in Nanaimo, the release notes.

Police are seeking the owner of the rifles, which according to the release, each have a tag on them and the name Tim attached to them.

Anyone with information on who owns the rifles is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
