Nanoose Bay residents are now in the process of deciding if they want the regional district to buy $1 million worth of new parkland.
The Regional District of Nanaimo, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, launched an alternate approval process to ask residents if they support acquiring 3427 Tyee Cres. as an addition to Blueback Community Park in Nanoose Bay’s Fairwinds neighbourhood. The 0.13-hectare waterfront property is east of the current park boundaries.
Residents of the RDN’s Electoral Area E who oppose borrowing to acquire the park must submit an elector response form by Feb. 14.
According to an RDN staff report, $130,000 of the $1,065,500 purchase price would come out or reserves, and the balance of $930,500 would be borrowed over a 20-year term. The park acquisition would need to be followed by site restoration including demolition of a 55-year-old cottage on the property, with $30,000 already budgeted for that work in the 2022-26 financial plan.
