Neufeld ready to tackle city water

New Parksville city councillor Bill Neufeld is excited about his new position on council.

New Parksville city councillor Bill Neufeld is excited about his new position on council and eager to start working on what he sees as the biggest issue facing the city.

“As I’ve said before, water is the prime concern and the cost of the treatment plant,” he said.

“I think it’s based on a lot of false assumptions, such as the number of people that are going to be living here,” he said.

Neufeld said the treatment plant is based on the Regional District of Nanaimo growth strategy which calls for, “a tremendous amount of growth in Nanoose Bay and Fairwinds that the community of Parksville keep making clear it doesn’t want.”

He said even the highest growth estimates for the next 20 years don’t justify the cost that the Parksville residents are going to be faced with.

Other areas of concern he wants to get into include tourism and the arts, which he said could work together with things like the historical society to develop a more unique plan for downtown revitalization.

He said the city should be supporting the arts and historical groups more actively as a way to promote tourism.
