Construction of a new $2.2-million pump station that will provide drinking water from the Englishman River to Nanoose Bay residents year-round is about to get underway.
The Regional District of Nanaimo currently supplies surface water from the Englishman River to the Nanoose Bay Peninsula Water Service Area, but on a seasonal basis only from May to October.
This helps cut the demand for municipal groundwater wells.
The construction of the new pump station on west side of Northwest Bay Road near Craig Bay will allow the RDN to supply water on a year-round basis and also accommodate future development within the water service area.
The Englishman River Water Service (ERWS) will provide water to the City of Parksville and NBPWSA, which is also under construction as a separate project being managed by the City of Parksville and the RDN.
The contract was awarded to Windley Contracting Ltd., and work is scheduled to begin this month and run through the end of March 2019.
There will be no interruption in water service and there will be minor traffic disruptions intermittently throughout the construction period.
The RDN reminds residents to observe and obey all posted signs, speed limits, and traffic control personnel during construction of this important infrastructure.
Staff indicated that being aware will help to ensure the safety of the construction crews and the travelling public.
