New price tag for Dashwood fire hall project comes in at $6.2M

Project cost has risen by more than $2 million

The new price tag of the proposed Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department’s fire hall project has received support from the electorate.

The Regional District of Nanaimo held an alternative approval process, in accordance with Section 86 of the Community Charter, to seek electors’ endorsement for a loan authorization bylaw that will allow the regional district to borrow a total of $6,243,662 to construct the the fire hall.

The previous amount of the project approved in the 2019 budget was $4,150,000. It went up another $2,243,662 as the project was stalled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The alternative approval process that concluded on June 27 received only 18 valid electoral response forms out of the 1,542 eligible electors in the Dashwood Fire Hall Service Area in opposition to Bylaw No. 1785.01 and Bylaw No. 1789.01. Approval for the bylaws was obtained since less than 10 per cent of electors submitted a response form by the deadline.

The RDN will borrow $6,243,662 on behalf of the rate payers that would be repaid over a period not to exceed 25 years.
