New Year's Eve Day crash didn't involve booze

Lasqueti Island man issued a ticket for for failing to stop at a red light

A 71-year-old Lasqueti Island man has been ticketed $167 for failing to stop at a red light after a two-vehicle collision New Years Eve.

Police were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. where the lone occupant of a grey Toyota Rav 4 collided into a white BMW carrying a family of three, including a seven-year-old boy.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said the driver of the Toyota Rav 4, a Lasqueti man, did not stop at a red light at the intersection where Northwest Bay Road meets Highway 19.

Foreman said the BMW was flipped up on its side, but confirmed both drivers and passengers were attended to and nobody sustained major injuries from the incident.

Traffic was stopped in both directions following the incident.

Foreman said alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the collision. "It was a mistake on the part of the driver," he said.
