The Odd Soxs rocked at the Annual Port Alberni Funtastic/Okee Dokee Slo-Pitch Tournament.
They were dressed as 80s rock stars featuring Axl Rose, Dee Snyder and Alice Cooper and drew some attention during the three-day tournament held over the Canada Day weekend.
Although they did not win the tournament, the Parksville Qualicum Beach team did not return empty-handed. The Odd Soxs brought home a big honour which is the Rick Mykitiuk Memorial Most Sportsmanlike team trophy.
“We are excited to be back at these fun tournaments, and honoured to win this trophy out of the 70-plus teams that participated,” said Nikki Morton, one of the players.
This was the 32nd anniversary of the Okee Dokee Slo-Pitch Tournament, which is one of Port Alberni’s longest annual traditions. It started in 1988 and has grown every year since.

This year’s tournament was the first since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and had 74 teams coming from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
The Sinners from Campbell River were the A Division winners and overall top team.
The Larla-Land Costume Contest award went to the Monstermashers from Nanaimo.
The slo-pitch tournament was held in conjunction with a music festival at Bob Dailey Stadium. The headliner for this year’s music fest was 54-40 and more than 1,800 people were at the stadium on Saturday night for their show.
All funds raised from the event will go back to selected charities in the community.
Organizers are already looking forward to next year’s tournament. It will take place again on Canada Day weekend from July 1 to July 3.
