The City of Parksville’s public works open house this summer won provincial and national awards.

The City of Parksville’s public works open house this summer won provincial and national awards.

Public Works Association of B.C. president David Sparanese and vice president Deryk Lee attended a recent council meeting to present the national award for best first time entry and the provincial award for the “outstanding” open house they staged in Community Park May 24.

The awards recognize the city’s engineering and operations department who welcomed 500-plus people through their interactive displays, including more than 200 students.

Mayor Chris Burger said the open house, “was a great outreach for the city. Staff made the activities and displays accessible to residents of all ages. The event recognized the essential role of public works staff in our community’s quality of life and the daily operations that make our city a better place to live.”

Public works is responsible for things like the design, construction, operation and maintenance of roads, street lights, parks, vehicles, the water system and city buildings.
