Parksville council will support a bowling alley’s application to make its temporary patio permanent.

Sunset Lanes has applied to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) to permit the change.

The patio, which includes liquor service, is approximately 93 square metres and has space for 15 tables. It occupies three parking spaces that have been cordoned off with temporary fencing, tires, fabric shelter and planter boxes.

Liquor service hours are proposed to remain unchanged from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Sundays, according to a report to council on June 6 by Blaine Russell, director of community planning and building.

The building’s occupant load, including the patio, will increase from 50 to 106 people. It is approximately 80 metres from the nearest home, which is separated by a heavily treed area that should limit the noise impact, according to Russell’s report.

The loss of the three parking spaces to accommodate the patio and potential addition of new spaces will require a separate development variance permit/development permit application, according to Russell’s report.

Sunset Lanes has placed a sign on the property, as of April 25, to advertise the chance for input. The city advertised opportunity for public input in writing from residents in the area. It received one piece of correspondence from the public in support of the application.

Council voted in support of a resolution of ‘no objection’ to the LCRB with respect to the proposed structural change.
