Parksville city council members will represent the city at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference this year.

Coun. Doug O’Brien brought forth the motion at the last council meeting on Monday, March 7.

His motion read that council vote on, and authorize, the attendance of one or two additional members, to accompany Mayor Ed Mayne, at the FCM conference in Regina from June 2 to June 5, and that $3,000 per council member be taken from council contingency for the trip.

“Since there has been no attendance by any members of council for the past two years, and so forth, there has been no expenditures on it. And the hope was, with the advent of the FCM, with a progressive attendance level that most councillors that wanted to go would be able to attend once during their term of office,” said O’Brien, adding the offer to attend this year was already extended to himself, but that he would like to provide the opportunity for members next in rotation to go as well before the end of term.

Keeva Kehler, the city’s chief administrative officer, added while registration for the conference closes on April 22, it would be wise to address the motion today as booking flights and accommodations could be a challenge closer to the closing date.

O’Brien’s motion, seconded by Coun. Marilyn Wilson, unanimously passed in favour.
