Parksville council approves rezoning for 456 Island Hwy

Council gives final adoption during recent meeting

Parksville council has approved a bylaw to rezone 456 Island Hwy W from single family residential to comprehensive development.

Zoning and Development Amendment Bylaw, 2022, No. 2000.134 received final adoption by council during its Dec. 19 regular meeting.

Blaine Russell, director of community planning and building, said a specific project has not been defined for the property.

Coun. Amit Gaur asked if Russell was aware of any concerns from residents of a single family home, which borders the property.

Russell said he did not recall specific comments from the public hearing, held Sept. 7, but added the comments were “fairly limited in scope”.

Coun. Mary Beil asked if something had changed since the previous council’s April 20 meeting, when a delegation proposed a 28-unit development at 456 Island Hwy W.

Russell said he was not aware of any specific changes, but ultimately what will be built on the property will be a future application.

The property is located on the highway, close to Roscow Street. There is an undeveloped property to its east, a single-family home to its west and city-owned land and Mark’s Nature Park are to the south.

The area’s Official Community Plan (OCP) designation is mixed-use tourism commercial.
