Parksville council gives summer events approval

The Community Park and the streets of Parksville will be busy with events throughout 2013

Parksville city council passed a number of motions Monday night that set the stage for a busy summer season.

Various organizations have sought permission from the city to conduct their events in the Community Park and on the streets of the city. All of the motions were passed unanimously and they related to the following events:

• Coastal Community Credit Union's Sunset Cinema on the kite field in Community park from 3 p.m. to midnight, July 11 and their employee family fun day in the park July 28.

• Oceanside Outdoor Sports has permission to conduct its skills clinics, volleyball camps, league play and tournaments from May 6 to September 2 on the Community park beach volleyball courts. There was some suggestion big-time professional and amateur tournaments may be coming to Parksville this summer.

• Permission was granted for the use of the streets/sidewalks of the city for the Oceanside Running Club's 10 km Run May 12, the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Big Bike event June 4 and the Walk for ALS June 10.

Under the city's special events policy, organizations proposing to hold events on municipal property, streets or parks are required to apply for a special events permit. Event organizers must fulfill the requirements outlined on the policy, which may include insurance.
