Parksville council to appoint liaison to Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness

Island Crisis Care Society executive director welcomes council member

After receiving confirmation from the Island Crisis Care Society (ICCS), Parksville city council will once again have a member sit on the Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness as a liaison.

During the latest council meeting on Monday, Feb. 7, council received correspondence from Violet Hayes, executive director of the Island Crisis Care Society.

Hayes’s email, sent on Feb. 2, addressed to the chief administrative officer, Keeva Kehler, read that the organization “would absolutely welcome a liaison from the City of Parksville.”

Coun. Marilyn Wilson brought forth a notice of motion during the Dec. 20, 2021, council meeting regarding the appointment of a council member to the task force.

During the Jan. 17 council meeting, Coun. Doug O’Brien suggested an amendment to Wilson’s motion, indicating she would be the council member appointed to the position.

O’Brien’s amended motion did not pass, falling 4-3.

As O’Brien suggested, however, Mayor Ed Mayne said he would have city staff write to the Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness and ask if a liaison position for the city was still available and if it would be welcome.

Once Hayes’s correspondence was received during Monday’s meeting, O’Brien put forth another motion, seconded by Coun. Teresa Patterson, to again appoint a member of council to the task force.

Although not part of O’Brien’s motion, Mayor Ed Mayne said he would appoint Wilson as the liaison.
