The City of Parksville has opened a new online data portal.

The new portal features interactive maps and charts driven by the city’s data and provides information in a variety of formats, according to a news release by the city.

The city said it encourages residents to use or repurpose the City of Parksville’s open data for research purposes or to improve their interaction with municipal services.

“Open data is a permanent service provided to residents and businesses to access data free of charge and with few restrictions,” the release read. “The city’s open data program is one component of our commitment to be an open, transparent and accessible government.”

Community members can use the raw data to create and share resources such as maps and applications.

Individuals most likely to use this open data include professional and amateur software developers building apps to solve problems, as well as academics, researchers, media and the public to inform studies and to assist with analysis.

The Open Data portal may be accessed on the city’s website. Questions or suggestions can be directed to to gis@parksville.ca.
