Parrot refuge gets $13,000 boost from gaming company

• Local residents and businesses bailed out the Coombs animal rescue charity in trouble with the federal government. The World Parrot Refuge was served notice the refuge owed $13,000 for employer contributions on its payroll. The Great Canadian Gaming Corp., donated $13,000 to pay off the tax debt.

• At its meeting on June 27, the District 69 School Board heard an emotional plea from the parents of some of the 17 students who are on a waiting list for the kindergarten French immersion program beginning in September. The federal governments goal was to have half of all Canadian high school graduates be bilingual by 2010.

• A Qualicum Beach woman suffered burns to her hands and feet when she tried to pull burning items from the back of her pickup. The lady was moving some of her daughter’s personal effects when one of the items caught fire in the back of the truck, which she stopped in mid-highway.
