A small airplane comes in for a landing on the beach near Qualicum Beach on May 26.

When Qualicum Beach-area resident Charles Lee was enjoying some time on the beach on Sat., May 26, he noticed a small plane flying low over the water.

That plane, he said, then swooped down over the sand at the end of Yambury Road and came in for a landing — not once, but twice in the same time period.

"It was a single-engine airplane," Lee told The News. "It came in over the water and touched down on the sand at low tide."

The plane then revved up, took off, circled and landed again, said Lee, who added he only saw one pilot in the aircraft.

Lee added this was an unusual occurrence and he reported it to Transport Canada, citing safety reasons for doing so.

He recently spoke with a Transport Canada investigator, providing details about the plane, including its call letters. The News also spoke with Transport Canada and is waiting for the results of their investigation into the incident.

Lee said considering all of the concern over air traffic safety these days, Transport Canada should look into why the plane landed there, on a busy sunny afternoon, when people were using the beach.
