Police officers

I enjoy and appreciate our local newspaper, reading from cover to cover twice a week, so I was most disappointed to see the headline on the front page Thursday, ‘Local cops face charges’.

I believe our local law enforcement officers work very hard to be a respectful force, giving their most to our community in the way of safety, security and community support. In return, I think the least we can do is to address them as police officers, not cops.

I doubt that our news reporters would appreciate a headline: ‘Local snoops find great story’.

Wording is powerful and to me using the word ‘cops’ carries a negative connotation right away. When the article in mention is regarding a legal issue, it doesn’t help to start off with negative language.

I hope our local newspaper will continue to run interesting and informative community stories, respectfully addressing all members of our community.
