PQB crime report: Residents victimized by scammers on social media

Oceanside RCMP say one person reports being bilked out of $3,000

Oceanside RCMP received 234 complaints the week of Oct. 24 to Oct. 30.

Some of the incidents included:

Oct. 24

• Cash was reported stolen from a locked office drawer as well as jewelry missing from the activity centre of a health facility in the 700 block of Jones Street, Qualicum Beach.

• A cypress tree was reported vandalized by having its branches and bark stripped in the 900 block of Riley Road, Parksville.

• Legal documents were reported stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of Alberni Highway, Parksville.

• A resident was reported defrauded of $3,000 responding to an online Facebook Marketplace ad for an “A1 Max Storage” to buy a shipping container.

Oct. 25

• A gold colour LA Free e-bike was found in the 600 block of Island Highway East, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours and quote this file number to claim.

• A residential break-and-enter was reported in the 100 block of Horne Lake, Qualicum Beach. A male was apprehended and released to attend court at a later date.

Oct. 26

• A vehicle including a boat on a trailer was reported stolen in the 1700 block of Alberni Highway, Coombs. The vehicle was located a few hours later vandalized with the boat and trailer a short distance away in the 800 block of Chatsworth Road.

• A resident was reported scammed out of $500 responding to a Facebook Messenger text supposedly from a friend promising $30,000 in exchange for gift cards.

• A sum of money was found in the 100 block of Alberni Highway, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours and quote this file number to claim.

Oct. 27

• A storage shed was reported broken into with bedding and drug paraphernalia left behind in the 300 block of Craig Street, Parksville, on October 27.

• A Canada Post mailbox was vandalized in the 900 block of Chatsworth Road, Qualicum Beach. It is possible that some mail and/or parcels may have been stolen.

Oct. 28

• A white and blue Revolution Getaway 21-speed bike was found in the 300 block of Pioneer Crescent, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours and quote this file number to claim.

• Four old growth fir trees were reported illegally cut down by trespassers on private forest property in the Hilliers Road and Alberni Highway area.

• Two uninsured vehicles were reported stolen from a property in the 5100 block of Marmor Road, Nanoose Bay.

• A resident was the reported victim of identity fraud by disclosing their Canada Social Insurance Number to an unsolicited phone caller purportedly from a phone company offering a $65 credit.

Oct. 29

• Totes full of books were found in the area of Amity Way and Belkin Avenue, Parksville. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours and quote this file number to claim.

Oct. 30

• A sum of money was reported stolen as a result of a business break-and-enter in the 3000 block of Van Horne Road, Qualicum Beach. An exterior door was damaged.

• A residential break-and-enter was reported in the 1300 block of Chalet Road, Cameron Lake.
