Police seized about 25 pounds of fresh marijuana bud during a road check.

Having a small bag of marijuana in his shaving kit was probably a bad idea for a Port Alberni man Saturday night, when the smell of the pot led police to search the vehicle and discover much larger stash hidden in the back.

Vancouver Island Traffic Services Sgt. Joe Schofield reported the bust took place at 11:30 p.m. on Highway 4 near Qualicum Beach when police pulled over a Dodge Dakota pickup truck at a routine road check.

Officers could smell marijuana and brought this to the driver’s attention, who then turned over a small bag of pot that had been hidden in his shaving kit.

Police placed the 31-year-old under arrest and searched the vehicle, turning up approximately 25 pounds of fresh marijuana bud in three Kitchen Catcher-sized bags in the back.

The man was released on a promise to appear for possession for the purpose of trafficking.

His next court date is set for March 9 in B.C. Provincial Court in Nanaimo.
