Qualicum Beach Coun. Scott Harrison wants an image on the town’s crest changed.
In conversations with Qualicum First Nation Chief Michael Recalma Harrison was informed the teepee in the bottom right corner of the crest is not historically accurate for Indigenous people in the area.
“They did not live in teepees,” Harrison informed council at its regular meeting on May 18. “That’s Alberta, Saskatchewan and not so much around here.”
Harrison made a notice of motion the town ask the Qualicum First Nation to provide a more appropriate image to represent their culture for that section of the town crest.

“I don’t want the town to be guiding this process because we have shared territory with Comox and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations as well,” said Harrison. “So it’s not politicians like me who should be telling First Nations how they should work together to represent their own culture.”
Harrison said that Recalma had agreed to be the point person should the Comox and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations want to also be involved and provide feedback.
