Qualicum Beach shooting suspect charged

David Obetkoff remanded until Nov. 23 for incident Saturday

Police have charged a man in connection with a shooting last Saturday in Qualicum Beach.

Regarding the shooting incident that occurred this past Saturday morning.

On Tuesday, Crown counsel proposed four counts against 56-year-old David Obetkoff, including one count of aggravated assault, one count of criminal negligence by using a firearm, one count of criminal negligence by showing wanton or reckless disregard for the lives of safety of other persons and one count of possessing a loaded or restricted firearm.

Obetkoff has been remanded in custody with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 23 in Nanaimo Provincial Court.

The charges stem from an incident at a home on Kenmuir Road just after midnight, when Obetkoff allegedly went to his ex-girlfriend’s home and took several shots at the residence with a high-powered rifle, wounding a 22-year-old man in the leg.

Although the suspect fled the scene in a pickup truck, police caught up with him driving on Highway 19A in Qualicum Beach. He was arrested without incident.
