Qualicum Beach swimmer OK, say police

Coast Guard and chopper called in to assist with man swimming; false alarm, as it turns out.

Emergency crews scrambled to the Qualicum Beach beachfront on Friday to rescue a swimmer who appeared to be in danger of drowning.

However, even as a rescue helicopter hovered overhead and a Coast Guard rescue boat roared in to assist, police officers waved to the man and he swam to shore, wondering what all the fuss was about.

“Someone thought he was drowning, but he didn’t need help,” said Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman. “When police waved at him he came to shore by himself.”
