The Town of Qualicum Beach’s Memorial Avenue upgrade is in its final phase.
The viewing platform and separated walkway are the final components of the multimillion-dollar project that aims to enhance tourism and convenient access to the waterfront.
The total cost of this phase of the Memorial Avenue project is $1,620,574. Staff has looked for grants and funding sources to help finance the project.
Council approved staff recommendation to apply to the BC Destination Development Fund, which provides $30 million in one-time grants to support the development and rejuvenation of tourism infrastructure, assets and experiences.

Funding up of up to a maxium of $1,000,000 is being targetted by the town. However, the amount still leaves a balance of $620,574 that the town needs to pay form.
Mayor Teunis Westbroek had recommended at the last council meeting on Dec. 7, that staff also explore other grants. He made a motion directing staff to apply to the Island Coastal Economic Trust for funding. The motion was carried unanimously.
The completed components of the project include the $3.3-million roundabout and artificial spit built near the roundabout to re-establish an artificial estuary for Beach Creek.
