The Town of Qualicum Beach is supporting a proposal to build a mobile satellite visitor information kiosk that can be taken to a variety of events around in the region to help promote the town.

The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce is behind the concept and it has received the support of town council and also the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Committee, which have been requesting re-establishing a chamber presence in the downtown core over the past year.

The chamber used to have an office and also operated a visitor information centre at Leigh House on 124 Second Ave. But in 2016 a decision was made to close this location and maintain visitor information services at the waterfront location to cut costs.

Town council, at its regular meeting Sept. 21, agreed to fund 50 per cent of the total cost up to a maximum of $17,500 to help the chamber pay for the construction of the mobile facility, estimated to be $35,000. The mobile facility will be portable using a flat deck trailer.

The chamber will also make a request to the Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association for 50 per cent funding.

Among the benefits of having a mobile visitor centre kiosk, the chamber pointed out, are improving their presence in the downtown area and being closer to their members. To be able to greet visitors could also encourge them to stay long in the downtown area and benefit the local businesses.

As well, having the ability to bring the kiosk to a variety of events will help promote activities, attractions and other amenities the town has to offer. It will enhance visitor experience and promote increased and return visits.

The chamber beleives the kiosk will satisfy the next for visitor and resident information in the downtown area and at regional events. It will be staffed by workers hired through Canada Summer Jobs Program.
