The Town of Qualicum Beach is interested in exploring the ‘doughnut’ economic model municipalities such as the City of Nanaimo have adopted as a guiding principle.

Qualicum Beach council wants to learn more about the model. A notice of motion was presented at its regular meeting on Dec. 7 to invite representatives from the City of Nanaimo to present and share the concept.

Qualicum Beach council will consider the notice of motion at the Jan. 18 regular council meeting.

The doughnut economic model is a new concept that challenges economies to meet and exceed minimum global living standards and equity, while avoiding pushing beyond ecological limits.

Nanaimo is just one of a few local governments that include Amsterdam and Copenhagen to have followed this model.
