The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) will explore options on providing fire protection services to the Horne Lake region.

The RDN board at its regular meeting on Jan. 24 endorsed the fire protection feasibility study conducted by consultants Tim Pley & Associations in 2022. The board also referred the report to staff so they can start assessing recommended options that include cost considerations and estimates for a report.

The goal is to extend the fire protection services area of the Bow Horn Bay Volunteer Fire Department to include the community of Horne Lake in Electoral Area H (Bowser, Qualicum Bay, Deep Bay).

Horne Lake residents made this request in 2021 to the RDN because of increased concerns about fire safety and the cost of fire insurance as the area has experienced considerable growth with more activities occurring. The Horne Lake area consists of a large strata-owned property, including approximately 400 lakefront or nearby properties.

The consultants recommended a satellite fire hall be constructed in the area of the intersection of Horne Lake Road and Marshland Road to meet fire underwriters criteria.

The Bow Horn Bay Fire Department’s Superior Tanker Shuttle Services is recommended to be extended, as well, to the satellite fire hall response area to help reduce insurance premiums for properties in the area.
