The Regional District of Nanaimo is expanding the Blueback Community Park in Nanoose Bay.

The RDN on Aug. 15, 2022 purchased the property of 3427 Tyee Cr., which was endorsed via an alternative approval process that was held Feb. 22, 2022. The purchase price of the property was $1,060,500, of which $930,500 was financed through a loan.

The acquisition of the property was sought with the goal of adding it to the Blueback Community Park in the Fairwinds neighbourhood of Electoral Area E (Nanoose Bay).

The property has a house and septic tank required to be removed. But due to the presence of hazardous materials within the house, specific removal procedures are required.

A tender was issued and quotes for demolition of the house were received on Dec. 15, 2022. Milner Group Ventures Inc. had the lowest quote at $24,917.

Staff recommended to the RDN board funding for this project be approved in advance of the adoption of the five-year financial plan bylaw as the quote submitted by Milner Group is only valid for 30 days from date of receipt. Staff indicated this will allow the contract to be signed and work to commence before the quote expires.

A budget of $37,567 was recommened to be allocated to the demolition project and included in the 2023-2027 financial plan from the Electoral Area E Community Parks Service.
