Regional District of Nanaimo Area C director dies after battle with cancer

Maureen Young represented Extension-East Wellington-Pleasant Valley at the RDN table for 16 years

The longtime regional director for Extension-East Wellington-Pleasant Valley has died after a battle with cancer.

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced today, Nov. 19, the death of Maureen Young, who served on the board for 16 years as elected representative of RDN Electoral Area C.

The longtime resident had an avid interest in the region’s history, in particular Extension, where she lived, noted a press release from the RDN. Young was an active member of the community, supporting agriculture, forestry, and advancement of the regional parks system, and served as community grants committee chairperson.

She was proud of development of Extension Miner’s Community Park and the Mount Benson staging area, the press release noted.

“On behalf of the RDN board, we are deeply saddened by the loss of such a dedicated and inspiring member of our community. Maureen served her community and our region for decades,” said Tyler Brown, RDN board chairperson, in the release. “We extend our sincere condolences to her family. Her contributions to our communities will continue to be felt by residents for years to come.”

Charles Pinker, Young’s alternate, will serve as director in the interim until a byelection is held, the press release stated.
