The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is celebrating Water to Earth month with the community and partners through in-person and virtual events and activities.

World Water Day started on March 22 and Earth Day wraps it up on April 22. This year’s themes, ‘Accelerating Change’ with a focus on partnerships and cooperation, and ‘Invest in our Planet’ will be reflected in the many activities the public can participate in during Water to Earth month.

“Collaborative relationships and community initiatives that protect our watersheds are highlighted in this year’s Water to Earth month,” said Vanessa Craig, RDN Chair. “We invite residents to get involved and learn how we can work together to protect our shared water resources.”

This year, more than 16 events are planned during Water to Earth month including:

• A WellSmart workshop;

• Water Wise Gardening workshop;

• A Natural Landscapes for Climate Change workshop;

• Nanaimo River Watershed and Water Treatment Plant Tour;

• Nile Creek Streamwalk and Hatchery tour;

• A BioBlitz in your own backyard by tracking the plants and animals you see;

• Hamilton Marsh and Englishman River Estuary tours;

• Stewards in the Spotlight event;

• Online contests where you can share water conservation and climate action photos and stories on the RDN’s social media channels for a chance to win some great prize packs.

The RDN is partnering with the City of Nanaimo, Nanaimo Area Land Trust, Vancouver Island University, Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Institute, Mosaic Forest Management and The Brant Wildlife Festival to present these events during Water to Earth month.

Other contributing organizations include Nanaimo Science, Nile Creek Hatchery, Beban Learning Gardens, Arrowsmith Naturalists, The Nature Trust of BC, local experts and more.

The RDN works with these community partners throughout the year to support robust water monitoring programs, community events, stream restoration projects, outdoor education and other stewardship projects in our region.

Residents can participate by registering for one of the scheduled events, visiting the RDN Team WaterSmart Get Involved page at getinvolved.rdn.ca/team-watersmart for online activities and following the RDN on social media for fun contests.
