The Regional District of Nanaimo is offering residents free dropoff of their curbside waste at the Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville and landfill in Cedar.

The heavy snowfall and icy road conditions have made it difficult for RDN crews to meet their regular collection schedule.

Residents using the free dropoff will need to provide identification and their address at the facility scale house. The free dropoff will be available for affected areas until curbside service is fully restored.

The RDN, in a press release, indicated curbside collection service will be provided when and where it is safe to do so.

“Due to ongoing unsafe road conditions in many areas following the significant snowfall, the melting and freezing cycles we have been experiencing over the past few days, and the forecast for further snow, service delays are anticipated to continue,” the release stated.

Collection is subject to safe road conditions and may be further interrupted due to snow or icy roads. Once deemed safe, crews will resume in the order missed. If still not collected by 5 p.m. on the rescheduled collection day, residents are asked to continue to set their carts out between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. the following days, until they are emptied.

Rescheduled collection day:

Food waste carts will not be collected on the rescheduled collection days. An option for excess food waste is to place it bagged in the freezer or, alternately, if necessary, to place excess food waste in the garbage carts during this service disruption.

Regular collection schedule is expected to resume beginning the week of Monday, Jan. 10.
