The Regional District of Nanaimo is again asking the public for feedback as it develops a parks and trails strategy.
The RDN engaged the public in 2019 and 2020 in order to be better informed on constituents’ view of parks and trails, said a press release. The input was used to craft a draft vision, with actions and goals, and this time, the public is asked to review the strategy.
Results from the latest round of consultation will “confirm the draft vision, goals and actions” and the strategy will be amended if necessary, said the press release. The final document will include guidance around land acquisition planning and clarity on the RDN’s recreation and parks department core park services.
Tyler Brown, RDN board chairperson, said that public input will help guide the future of anything from green spaces and playgrounds to larger regional parks.
“Access to outdoor recreation contributes to our physical and mental well-being, so it is important that residents take the opportunity to provide their feedback,” Brown said in the press release.
In all, the RDN’s regional parks and trails system consists of 2,050 hectares of land and 78 kilometres of trails, said the press release, with 750 hectares of land in its community parks and trails system.
The document is expected to guide the RDN for the next 10 years.
