There are times in some rescues when mere seconds can mean the difference between life or death.
That’s when Arrowsmith Search and Rescue calls in the choppers to help them do their job. However, getting into and out of a hovering helicopter is actually a lot harder and more dangerous than it looks.
That’s why members of ASAR converged on the Qualicum Beach municipal airport to take part in a helicopter hover exit training exercise, in conjunction with Sunwest Helicopters Saturday.
Training officer Joe Kinch said 10 members of ASAR, along with one each from search and rescue teams from Nanaimo and Port Alberni took part in the exercise.
“The training was conducted to instruct members in how to safely exit a hovering helicopter for the purpose of initiating a search or rescue in an area not accessible by any other means,” he said.
