School board discusses shooting horror

Sandy Hook Elementary does not go unremarked in School District 69

A moment of silence for the victims and their families of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting started off this week’s local school board meeting.

Later, board chair Lynette Kershaw asked superintendent Jim Ansell to say a few words regarding District 69 practices. Ansell said following the horrific event, some best practices materials were sent out immediately to local schools from the province and agencies that respond to such tragic circumstances. From there schools followed up and took the initiative to support their students and parents, he said.

“I was really pleased to see schools found their own way to follow up and respond to support our students and their families in very successful ways, including a lot of newsletters that went home this week with suggestions for parents working with their children,” said Ansell.
