On Saturday, March 22, police say nearly 3,000 drivers in Parksville Qualicum Beach were stopped by RCMP as part of a national campaign to crack down on impaired and distracted driving.
Police say 20 members from across the Island set up check stops in strategic locations in Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Coombs and North Qualicum.
According to an Oceanside RCMP news release, police issued 50 violation tickets and 21 warnings, investigated six impaired drivers, conducted 10 drug seizures and executed two warrants.
“The vast majority of people were in complete compliance and appreciated the check,” said RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman.
“The few needing enforcement action will hopefully learn from the experience.”
While the RCMP did not make reference to this in the news release, a heavier-than-usual police presence was evident outside drinking establishments in Parksville on Friday night.
