Anne Skipsey is seeking re-election as a town councillor in Qualicum Beach.
Skipsey filed her nomination papers on Friday ahead of the Oct. 15 municipal election, according to a press release.
Less than a year-and-a-half ago, Skipsey was the successful candidate out of a field of five in the 2021 byelection, replacing the seat left empty by now MLA Adam Walker.
“When making our decisions, we need to consider what is best, not just for today, but understanding how the impact of our decisions will shape the Qualicum Beach of tomorrow,” said Skipsey to supporters outside town hall.
Skipsey said she chose a Friday to file her nomination papers as she knew a group of youths would be outside town hall as they have been every Friday for the last 52 weeks.
“They have been bringing attention to the climate emergency, holding us accountable here at town hall and inspiring us to do better,” said Skipsey.
Skipsey’s platform includes enhancing Qualicum Beach’s “coastal village” character with its walkability, unique shops, services and abundant green space. She also is committed to improving citizens’ access to health care and protecting and valuing our natural infrastructure including our urban forests and local watersheds.
Skipsey, whose background is in municipal administration, also served as a Qualicum Beach councillor from 2014 to 2018. She advocates for a mix of housing options, including affordable housing, and managed growth: “With a good plan and a clear shared vision, as laid out in our Official Community Plan (OCP), we can continue to keep the charm of Qualicum Beach and what makes our community special.”
She has a track record of supporting developments that align with the OCP, read the release.
Ms. Skipsey grew up in Qualicum Beach and now lives in the family home with her father, former mayor (1977-1990) and Town Freeman Art Skipsey, her husband, their teenage son and their puppy.
