Tackling weeds on private property in Qualicum Beach

Town trying to deal with invasive plants like Knotweed

Knotweed needs to be dealt with on private properties as well as on the town’s properties, Mayor Westbroek and Coun. Luchtmiejer told the gallery at council’s Monday night meeting.

“We have seen pictures where knotweed has actually punctured through eight inches of concrete and into foundation walls, into drainage pipes, into gas lines...so it is a huge problem,” said Luchtmeijer, adding that the United Kingdom is spending billions to address the issue.

Council directed staff to prepare a report as to the best way to deal with all invasive plants including knotweed, rather than just directing residents to a contractor who may be able to assist on private properties.
