The Parksville Qualicum News is pleased to announce the return of Michael Briones to our editorial staff, effective this week.

Briones covered sports for The NEWS in 1997 before leaving to attend university. He is back after spending the last five years covering local governments for the Comox Valley Echo, which was merged with the Comox Valley Record last week.

His responsibilities will include the Regional District of Nanaimo and sports beats, along with general assignment reporting.

“I enjoyed my time in the Comox Valley. I loved the work I did there,” said Briones. “I made so many friends there and established a good relationship with elected officials. I aim to do the same her at the PQB NEWS. I look forward to working in sports again while also reporting on regional district issues.”

Originally from the Phillipines, Briones got his start in the newspaper business in 1981 as a proofreader at The Standard, an English-language daily in Hong Kong. Since immigrating to Canada in 1990, he has written on police, governments, sports and general assignment for newspapers in Ontario, Northern B.C. and Vancouver Island, including the Nanaimo News Bulletin and the now-defunct Alberni Valley Times.

To contact Briones, call 250-905-0026 or email michael.briones@pqbnews.com.
