Town OK with youth street hockey

Qualicum Beach briefs

The Town of Qualicum Beach likes a proposal put forward by a local youth group to start up a street hockey league. Council agreed in principle to back the proposal, which was put forward by The Hand.

• Qualicum Beach is on board with a proposal to host the BC Seniors Games. However, they can’t — and won’t — do it alone. Council agreed to support the idea, which was floated by the parks and recreation commission, with the proviso that the City of Parksville and the Regional District of Nanaimo also co-host the event.

• The Qualicum Beach Community Garden Society  will soon be playing the role of Johnny Appleseed in a new community orchard. Council gave the society a licence of occupation for part of the Village Way right of way in order to raise fruit crops in a community orchard.

• Town council has agreed to once again chip in to help run the Ocean Mile Swim. Council will put up to $250 towards the event, which is slated for Aug. 21.

 • Two members of the Qualicum Beach Volunteer Fire Department have retired. Alex Rushton and Samantha Lewko left for employment on the Lower Mainland.
