UPDATE: COVID-19 spreads in Nanaimo as case reported at another high school

COVID-19 is spreading in Nanaimo with the school district now reporting a positive case at another high school.

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools is advising of COVID-19 exposure at John Barsby Secondary on Nov. 5-6. The school district says the individual is at home isolating and Island Health is contact tracing and will identify close contacts.

Schools notify all families about positive COVID-19 cases and the school district points people to Island Health’s school exposures web page for more information.

Dale Burgos, school district spokesman, said families are being asked to check on a daily basis that children are feeling well and students are asked to stay home if they’re sick.

“If you’re not feeling well, showing any symptoms, call 811 or do the online self-assessment tool,” he said.

In an interview earlier today with the News Bulletin, he discussed some of the anxiety in the community and the enhanced cleaning that’s happening at schools.

Dover Bay Secondary school has two individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past four days so that school is now classified as having a cluster of cases.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix reported in a joint statement Tuesday that there have been 525 new COVID-19 cases in B.C. since yesterday, with seven of those cases on Vancouver Island. Island Health reports 41 active cases in the health authority, with 12 of those cases on the central Island.
