UPDATE: Minor injuries reported after fire destroys Coombs trailer

Fire official says blaze not considered suspicious

One person was treated for minor injuries after a fire destroyed a trailer near Coombs yesterday (June 21).

Crews from Coombs Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident shortly after 11:42 a.m. and were assisted by Errington Volunteer Fire Department and Qualicum Beach Fire Rescue, according to Theresa Benoit, lieutenant of fire prevention and training for the Coombs department.

Martin Kelly, who said he lives nearby, said he heard a boom and someone yelling “fire!”

He and his friend, Ben Mylymok, ran up the road and saw the top of the trailer was engulfed in flames.

“I just went and grabbed my hose and my wife called 911,” Mylymok said.

The cause was not determined, but it was not considered suspicious and is not under investigation at this time, according to Benoit.

Oceanside RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and Oceanside Emergency Support Services (OESS) also responded to the incident. OESS assisted six evacuees with access to lodging, food, clothing and incidentals for 72 hours. Red Cross will assume care for the evacuees after 72 hours of OESS support, according to Chris James OESS director.
