The 2018 Tour de Rock is scheduled to be in Parksville Qualicum Beach today (Thursday).

The riders will make stops at various locations that include Kwalikum Secondary School (at approximately 2 p.m.), Arrowview Elementary (2:30 p.m.), Thrifty Foods (3 p.m.) and at Quality Resort Bayside (3:21 p.m.).

There will be a Beer and Burger dinner at 6 p.m. For $25, you get the chance to meet the riders, hear amazing stories from cancer survivors, and also watch people get their head shaved to raise funds for the tour, which is in its 21st year.

Among them will be Parksville’s well-known and prolific community volunteer Joan Lemoine, who has had her head shaved in each of the last six years, raising close to $30,000.

The 88-year-old Lemoine does this specifically for Camp Goodtimes, the Canadian Cancer Society’s camp for children with cancer at Loon Lake in Maple Ridge.

Last year, Lemoire had the rare opportunity to visit and spend a day at the camp.

The experience has deeply touched her and she said it was an honour and great privilege.

“I want the kids to have a good time at Camp Goodtimes,” said Lemoine. “It’s an amazing camp. I met a little guy, four years old, with cancer. And he told me it was the ‘goodest’ time he ever had.”

Tonight, Lemoine will have the razor shear her locks and she hopes to raise $10,000.
