After pulling out of the Qualicum Beach mayoral race last week for health concerns, current mayor Tuenis Westbroek has thrown his hat back in the ring for councillor.

Westbroek said his health problem was a bit of a false alarm and through improved diet and exercise he’s feeling great.

“People suggested I go for council, it’s not as much work but I’d still have some influence on projects and certain ideas,” Westbroek said.

A project he’s passionate about is building affordable and suitable homes for families on Town-owned lands.

“We have Town-owned lands by the airport next to Chartwell,” he said. “We’ve got about eight acres that I think we can account for 70 or 80 module homes. We bought the property for about $126,000 20 years ago and I thought we could use that and we’ve got another five acres near Bennett Road that I think would make great family type housing.”

Westbroek, Qualicum Beach mayor for 19 years, also remains passionate about traffic calming, safety, sidewalk improvements, cutting green house gases and financial stability.

“I see a lot of issues that I’d like to see complete with support of council and whoever is going to be mayor,” he said. “I think I still have something to contribute.”
