A wind warning is in effect for areas of Vancouver Island’s east coast and the Gulf Islands.
Environment Canada issued the warning Tuesday morning for Duncan to Fanny Bay, advising that “persons in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.”
The warning was updated soon after to note that “strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring,” gusting to 70-90 kilometres per hour over parts of the Island near the Strait of Georgia.
BC Ferries cancelled the 10:15 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Duke Point as well as the 12:45 p.m. from Duke Point to Tsawwassen. There were numerous cancelled sailings on the Comox-Powell River route and smaller routes in that region this morning due to “high winds and sea state,” noted a B.C. Ferries travel advisory.
BC Hydro says it has crews en route to a power outage affecting 2,200 customers in the Qualicum Bay-Fanny Bay area.
