Barry passed away peacefully at Nanaimo General Hospital on October 7, 2021 at the age of 90 years.
Barry is survived by Lorraine, his loving wife of 69 years; his two daughters, Angela (Philip) and Janita, six grandchildren, Natasha, Dominic, Michael, Tyler, Cole and Sarah, and his brother Alan ( New Zealand).
He was predeceased by his two sons, Barry Jr. and Murray, and his two sisters, Joan and Raewyn.
Barry was born in New Zealand and raised on the family farm. He left the farm to apprentice as an auto mechanic at the age of 16. He loved cars and worked most of his life as a mechanic. He spent many hours in his workshop and could fix anything. He enjoyed reading, history, music and travelling.
Shortly after their marriage in New Zealand in 1952, Barry and Lorraine started their globe trotting. They spent many months camping in a small van exploring Europe before arriving in Canada (Toronto) in 1955. They returned to New Zealand in 1961 and raised their family, then moved back again to Canada (Calgary) in 1977. In 1990 they bought a motel in Kelowna and in 1998 built and operated Casa Grande Inn in Qualicum Beach for 20 years until his retirement. He enjoyed meeting and talking with the guests about their travels. He spent many holidays in Hawaii, and visited most of the United States.
He will be sadly missed.
