Beryl José Smith

Beryl José Smith (nee Lewis) died quietly at Qualicum Manor on November 12, 2012. Sadly in 2005, husband Fraser died at home after a lengthy illness. She is pre-deceased by her son Mike (1952-1973) and brother Neville. Survived by sister Gloria (who lives half the time with her daughter and son); daughter Terry; nieces and nephews: Dode, Deanna, Dave, Gary, Donna, Harley, Debbie, Donald, Naomi, Sandra, and Philip whom live in England and ‘Wesley’ Weston (deceased). Also called Aunt by; Colton, Sean, Aden, Melissa and Danielle.

Beryl was born at #72 Ralph Road, Birmingham, England on August 6th, 1926 to Neville ‘George’ Lewis and Rose Ann (nee Jones). At the age of 17, she joined the British Army as a Signals Operator at Bletchey Park in England. After becoming a nurse in 1948, Beryl was sent to post war Germany by the Red Cross. She immigrated to Canada in 1950 and went to work at the Red Cross hospital in Hamilton, Ontario later being sent to Canadian Red Cross outpost in Emo, Ontario.

Beryl married the love of her life Fraser (Fray) Smith on June 1951 in Fort Frances, Ontario. In 1952, their son Michael was born. She attended Lakehead University, Thunderbay (1975) as a full-time student where she graduated as Doctor of Psychology. Beryl had a successful psychology practice in Atikokan, Ontario from 1979 to 1980; Cold Lake, Alberta from 1980 to -1982.

Beryl retired to Parksville (1982) with Fray to enjoy her hobbies: painting, golfing and gardening. During 1983 to 1987, she served as President of the Cancer Society of BC and Yukon. In 1990 Beryl was awarded the Governor General’s Medal.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday,
