In loving memory ~ It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce Doug's passing after a courageous fight with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Bill and Pat McLean, Doug leaves behind his devoted partner, Kerry Bowman, his daughter, Alicia (Michael), his son, Sean, and his sisters Lynn Kirkpatrick (Paul) and Kay Gray (Bruce).
Doug was born and raised in Tsawwassen and moved to Errington on Vancouver Island as a young man where he began a business recycling scrap metal. Influenced by his parents' passion for the environment and his own enthusiasm or taking things apart and fixing them, after 40 years of "scrapping" and recycling, Doug single-handedly prevented an enormous amount of waste from going into landfills. He could fix just about anything and saw value in much of that which society cast away. He rarely had to buy anything as he was always discovering discarded goods that he was able to rehabilitate and use. Doug was a man ahead of his time and earned his living doing what he loved.
Doug was kind and generous with his time to those in need. His words were few but heartfelt, thoughtful and unexpectedly poetic. He lit up the room with his humble presence and a unique yet understated sense of humor. His respect for the environment, people and animals will be missed by many in his community.
At Doug's request, there will be no service. If you would like to honor Doug's life, please reduce, reuse and recycle, and consider a donation to an environmental protection organization.
